what your hands hold
(c) 2015 by margaux delotte-bennett

I have told you before
but I don’t think you heard me

how your well placed hand
braids my frayed and tattered edges

around and over
connection
over and through
weaving
placed with care
ordered

your touch brings breath
to parts of me
I didn’t know were waiting
to gasp
as you grasp
adding air to
heart and lungs
feeling
full

it doesn’t really matter where

my knee
the side of my neck
brushing the underside of my belly
just there

it is always welcome
after being sorely missed
whether for minutes
or days

my mind plays tricks
and my body moves
to place itself in line with where your hand may fall
or drift
or rest

I am always ready for a call to worship

a laying on of hands

poem of the week: confession

i often tend to steer clear of rhyming in my poetry because it always makes me think of Dr. Seuss. this poem needed to rhyme at times, so i just let it. it was fun to write and to remember…

confession

I’ve gotten drunk off a kiss

knee buckling
blurry eyed bliss
shouting at the top of my lungs
YES!

eyes open
closed
mouth open
closed
tongue exploring
then massaging
painting pictures of desire just beyond teeth tethered
and tamed
anticipating the moaned refrain

I’ve gotten drunk off a kiss
shared breath pushing the hunger
to a fever pitch
lingering for THE moment
waiting for THE time
wanting to be tasted as I’m wrapped in arms
and legs
and sighs

there were times when it was the first
but more often
the last
a swift collection of memories
before an impending fast?

foggy, yet emboldened
ready and waiting, but never remiss

just taking a moment to thank my stars
there were times I’ve gotten drunk
off a kiss

poem of the week: waking life

I am singing, acting and dancing my HEART out next Sunday, 6/24/12!

For the last few months I have been working hard with members of my theater company, The Saartjie Project, to revisit, remount and revive our show Four Women.

We are so excited to present an even more expanded, “kaleidoscope of womanhood,” inspired by the classic Nina Simone song. We will be performing for ONE NIGHT ONLY as part of the 2012 DC Black Theatre Festival.
Click here to get your tickets now. We hope to sell out!

the poem of the week is a piece i wrote last week upon waking from a dream.  It feels like a poem that Nina Simone’s character Sweet Thing might write…

waking life

I woke up this morning
with your taste on my tongue

the shrill telephone ring
abruptly ending
our dream world tango

your body
a composite of shells
forms & shapes I’ve known
and wish to know

but your taste on my tongue
is distinct

if only I could remember

who
you
are…

poem of the week: tongue tied

i wrote a lot this week, thanks to the inspiration of the monthly writing circle i help to facilitate. There are a number of pieces that need some fine tuning, but this one is ready to spread its little wings…

tongue tied
(c) 2012 margaux delotte-bennett

your native tongue drips from my lips
sometimes
syllables formed in throats open
and hungry
we speak in a language still being born
because it has
no cultural context
no historical notions
no links to a particular time while
claiming a certain space

our bodies long to speak the language
that our tongues are trying to create
bodies long and straight
tongues curled and warm
dancing across palates and teeth spread

to await
the safe passage

through
parted lips
ready

to be filled.

poem of the week: the part

heartfelt greetings and salutations!

i will soon get back to my schedule of posting the poem of the week on or by tuesday evening. you may or may not have noticed that it gets posted, whenever it GETS posted, these days! there has been very little routine to my life as of late. lots of dancing, connecting with beautiful souls and preparing for my birthday next week…

this past friday morning i actually wrote 2 pieces that I have revisited/ revised today. i love waking up with enough time to spend with myself and my thoughts. i have been pretty introspective lately, so i wanted to challenge myself to write a piece that was not about me. i hope that you enjoy the results as much as i do.

the part

I saw poetry at the back of her head
her hair neatly parted
with a visible dip
probably from when she itched
or twitched after so many moments
of stillness
little girls are not made for sitting still
getting primped
and braided up
they do it because they must
no need to always fuss
about the inevitable

the jagged part is a sign of her freedom
elongating like her bones
muscles
memories of what it used to be like years ago

the jagged part is a sign of her nature
mostly pulled together
but not perfect
mostly safe
but not sound
a veering off the straight and narrow road
to womanhood
(which is neither straight nor narrow…)

I pray her life is like the part
between her twin braids
going from beginning to end
top to bottom
but with a little side stepping
along the way

the poem of the week for this week is an older poem, but it was recently reprised for a wonderful art event last Friday with Tina S. Lassiter. Her goddess collages and photographs will be on display at the 5th and K Busboys & Poets until early October. Her art can be found in this post and here and her blog can be found here. I hope that you are taking some time to fully savor your lives…

Taste
© 2001-2004 by margaux delotte-bennett

I hunger
and begin to search for you
yet all I have is your taste in my mouth
and on my mind
my taste buds scream out
because the salt of your skin is like the sweetest ambrosia
it is as if your pores are honeycomb
that forever runneth over

I hunger
and the taste of your breath still lingers
and leads me on
my tongue starts to tingle
to quake
shake
to palpitate as my salivary glands start to stream
my eyes skim over the horizon
to find the only thing that will satiate me

sweet retreats as
sour devours me
salt causes a halt
as bitter titters my name’s hungry refrain
and combinations tastefully concocted
still leave me
famished

ears plugged and eyes closed
to focus all energy
on the tip of my tongue
which waits
so hungrily
for you

Poem of the Week: Re-Member

i wrote this piece before the national poetry writing month poem a day challenge. my pen has been quite busy as of late!

re-member
(c) 2011 margaux delotte-bennett

the small of my back
the tip of my tongue
the side of my neck remembers

my pinky toe
the back of my knees
my clit remembers

the inside of my arm
my eyelashes
the front of my hip remembers

that which my heart knows
but tries
in vain
to forget…
