a wash
(C) 2017 by margaux delotte-bennett

I remember once washing her hair
rendered baby soft because of the chemo
salt and pepper
and fine like a newborn kitten’s belly

she even purred
Oh that feels good, meatball
a pet name freely sprinkled
near and far

this moment
a snapshot inked in my memory
because she was soothed
the knit of her brow
unraveling
a return of comfort and care
lavished on me
long before

Scratch just there, my sweetheart

now that she’s gone
her satisfied release of breath
is a prayer
passed down and through
that particular moment
straight into
my life
