Dress rehearsal for Urban Bush Women, Opening Nights

bush women profess
(c) 2017 by margaux delotte-bennett

if i allow myself to be in this state, i will go beyond what i feel capable of…
-artist talkback after the performance

today’s poem started as a bead of
sweat
rolling down a back
into a butt crack

arms akimbo
feet flap the ground
we don’t always have space
to concentrate on the sounds
of dance

bodies twirling
create whistling wind
legs bent
breath begins
to shorten
get sharp
release heat

it is hard to stay
in my seat
and not join the celebration
of limbs and spirit

but what a blessing
to be near it
