I have not been in police custody
who knows if I would have lived to tell the tale
but I do know from direct action and civil disobedience training
that when you get arrested
belongs that you could potentially use to harm yourself
are confiscated

first and foremost
on entry
upon arrival on the scene

and so I wonder
did the miscarriage of justice
known as the “hanging” death of #SandraBland
start all the way in processing?

apartheid South Africa taught me about
convenient jailhouse “suicides”
“drowning” oneself in the toilet
“hanging” oneself in a cell without beams
firmly destroying the life force that made you worth being arrested in the first place

fashioning a trash bag into a noose?
how obtuse!
activists are so magical…

they can’t seem to dismantle oppression,
but they can eradicate
their own sweet lives.
