i know a number of people who have lost a loved one recently. the first draft of this piece was going in another direction, but i think where it landed this evening is the right place…

petals always seem to peel
up and out
forever opening towards the sun

protectively surrounding the bits that are most
tender
the pieces needed to reproduce
regenerate
revise the story of
drying and dying
on the road leading towards a certain end
a tale now redirected towards an uncertain beginning

sometimes colors become muted
but the fragrance is more boldly sensed
dying flowers let their presence be known
filling rooms and hallways
with their pungent perfume

they continue to slowly open to take up more space
staking claims to larger areas
before letting go
giving up
returning to the elements
from which they grew

we are just like the flowers

this is our story too.
