in this new year
© 2013 by margaux delotte-bennett

there will be no collards (with muted and washed out hues)
no peas with blackened eyes
this life needs more than chanced luck and fortune

providence should always be on the side of those that struggle each morning just to lift their heads and face the day
a day as yet unwritten
but still offered
even to those
with broken hearts and battered spirits

there is nothing one can eat to make it any easier
this life is hard to swallow at times
even bitter

but the head must be raised
the foot must swing over the side of the resting place and onto the floor
the body must rise
to greet the new year

Great poem! I am totally with you, though I must admit I did eat noodles on new year’s eve (a Chinese tradition). I’d eat noodles even if they gave me bad luck though. . .
