“scars are just another kind of memory” –M.L. Stedman

skin is a natural container
for memories
not unlike the heart and mind
it is a canvas on which
time and history
can be
researched
remembered
revealed

a physical entry into the annals of a life
not lived exclusively
on this side of safety
or on that side of pain
though the moment has passed
the scars remain

regardless of intention
stories neither skin deep
nor skimming the surface
are etched in flesh
once raw
now telling
of a particular moment in time

whether pigmented or not
these markings
color the mind towards an educated guess about risks
taken or sought
experienced as they trek and track across
limbs burdened
with forever carrying
the sign

the sign of a point in time
unable
unwilling
to just simply fade away.
