pants on fire (working title)

he doesn’t even believe himself
but he loudly claims it anyway
in hopes that in the telling
someone will be convinced
including him

tall tails have followed him
all of his days
they are a constant
companion

the truth tends to leave him feeling
butt naked
exposed
but he prefers to be adorned
from head to toe
in the silken threads
of today’s yarn

the lies are never meant to hurt
though they sting his tongue
as they burrow holes
into their minds

he claims to be fine with
whatever comes his way
in response to the stories
the half truths
the fabrications

but somehow neither of us quite believes that
whitest of lies
today
