the naming of me
© 2011 by margaux delotte-bennett

child conceived second
the one who came 8 days early
she who started to be born
then stopped to turn around and
weigh her options
child of tears and worry
child of dance school and debate team
she who lives hard and loud
daughter who’s place was next to
beside
up under her mother
the one who ventured out because her place was safe at home
she who finished high school
she who finished college
she who travels the seven seas
learning
sharing the bounty of all she has yet
to know and understand
she who continues to search
margaux (named after a beautiful, but tragic Hemingway)
treszka (a Hungarian variation on a beloved great grandmother’s name)
delotte-bennett (for the father who walked out, but not far enough to be conveniently forgotten)
she who is known by other names in various countries and languages
spoken and signed
daughter of the world
who find home wherever she lands
