as a part of this challenge i get a writing prompt in my email box each morning to help spark my creativity. today i was asked to write from the perspective of something i own…

what my unbrella knows
(c) 2011 by margaux delotte-bennett

i lie on this shelf
wrapped
stiff
waiting

i sometimes get shifted to a bag
the floor
another bag
back on the shelf

some days the warm hand
wrapped around my handle
is the closest i come to use
utility

i long to be of service
i was made
for
it

providing shelter from the sun or a light rain doesn’t cut it

give me wind that flips me out
a downpour that billows my sides
and rattles my ribs

in springtime i am in my prime
ready
thirsty
open
