i have been in a theater company/ artistic tribe for the last 2+ years called The Saartjie Project. this past weekend, my Saartjie sisters and i performed a showcase of new work co-created with some amazing artists from the community. the Nina Simone song, Four Women, has been the company’s muse for the last year and we decided to use the song / archetypes/ lyrics as a thread during our workshop ‘experiment’.   Saffronia’s verse (from Four Women) was the inspiration for this piece i shared on sunday…

just beneath, for SAFFRONIA

the surface…
kinky haired black girl
taller than the rest
not too much booty to speak of
bountiful chest
I must like waiting to exhale
or crack up to Martin’s mess
the messages are clear
do not stray too far from the rest

rocker, activist, renegade
soy sausage and pink lemonade
raving unto the fantastic joy
kissing girls and kissing boys
belonging between 2 worlds
not black enough, but never white
Erasure and U2 sometimes Kravitz despite
how few that look like me are seen really rockin on MTV
inner white boy it sometimes seems
we have always connected easily in life and dreams
that can not be deferred or defined
my conquering soul also
seldom waits in line

until your mere surface understanding

attempts to darken my shine
