a poem for National Coming Out Day…

october 11th is a day that usually comes and goes without much fanfare.

it’s a day i learned about in college as an ally and then commemorated as a ‘family’ member years later.

i am bisexual.

and every time i share that truth with others, it’s coming out day.

whether we consciously know it or not, there are people that we ALL cherish that are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and/ or questioning. homophobia and other forms of oppression based on difference affects each of our lives. we have to make our world safe for everyone. period.

today i discovered (c) 2010 by margaux delotte-bennett

sometimes i forget

on purpose or by accident

always by dissociation with my mind and my heart

i forget that i am queer

different

same gender lovin’

a gay girl

bi

not straight and not narrow.

when i am fully me

my quintessential box turns into a hexagon

and the binary turns poly

because though i may look like i fit in

i have never felt like i do

except in spaces where explanations are unnecessary

because we are all (fill in the blank)

but my capacity for love amazes even me

that it can’t be regulated to he or she

and sometimes follows a pattern…

it is not indecision i’m in

it is bliss

because at least i know

that what i want is bigger and wider than their expectations

and they often surpass my own

i love the soul

and the shell is just icing on the cake

i may have know this before

but i felt is today
